How to prep your home for a big winter storm

A winter storm is predicted for most of the U.S. this weekend, including NW Ohio and SE Michigan. We want to make sure you stay warm, safe, and stress-free. While our maintenance team is working hard to prep the grounds, there are a few simple steps you can take inside your apartment to prevent common winter headaches like frozen pipes or drafts.

Here is your quick checklist for storm readiness:

1. Let the Faucets Drip

When temperatures drop well below freezing, the water in your pipes can freeze and expand, leading to bursts. To prevent this, leave your kitchen and bathroom faucets on a very slow drip. This keeps water moving and relieves pressure in the system.

2. Open Your Cabinets

It might feel a little cluttered, but opening the cabinet doors under your sinks allows the warm air from your apartment to circulate around the plumbing. This is especially important for sinks located against exterior walls.

3. Keep the Heat Consistent

We know it’s tempting to lower the thermostat to save on energy, but during a severe freeze, please keep your heat set to at least 65°F (18°C). This ensures the internal structure of the building stays warm enough to protect the utility lines.

4. Seal Out the Drafts

  • Blinds and Curtains: Keep them closed at night to add an extra layer of insulation.

  • Door Sweeps: If you feel a draft coming from your front door, a rolled-up towel placed at the base can do wonders for keeping the cold air out.

5. Be Prepared

Ensure your devices are charged and you have a flashlight handy in case of local power flickers. Avoid using candles and never use a gas oven or stove to heat your apartment, as this poses a serious carbon monoxide risk.

🚨 Important: If Your Heat Goes Out

Your comfort and safety are our top priorities. If your heating system stops working during the storm, please do not wait. Call our Emergency Maintenance Line immediately at: 419-824-0000
